John F. Kennedy once said, “Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.” Without a sense of purpose, many aspects of our lives can feel unfocused, even empty or without meaning. In contrast, the feeling that our decisions and our actions are driven by something meaningful provides satisfaction, a greater sense of accomplishment, and a charge of energy.

The positive feelings from fulfilling purpose can be life-changing, letting us feel good in the moment and even impacting our long-term health. Volunteerism brings that for many people. Yet, purpose can show up in countless ways when we’re conscious of our “why” and what truly matters to us. That can include a community “why”, like Humana’s commitment to whole person health and human care. Purpose emerges when what we do makes a difference and we see footprints we’ve left in the world.

Cultivating a sense of purpose is ingrained in Humana’s culture, and it’s key to sustaining lifelong well-being.

During challenging times, finding purpose – in whatever form – can galvanize well-being.

Purpose not only feels good, it impacts our emotional and physical health. A sense of common purpose can unify people of different backgrounds and perspectives. Likewise, when we engage in activities connected to our purpose, we experience a greater sense of control. All these feelings are very meaningful in a year filled with challenges.

We’ve learned that associates who strongly agree with “My life has a purpose” experience 10 additional Healthy Days per month, including seven additional Mentally Healthy Days. They’re also more than 25 percent less likely to report elevated stress.

Meaningful work in our professional lives can provide a strong sense of purpose.

Many of our associates find an enhanced sense of purpose and satisfaction by serving others, like working closely with our members. For example, our physicians and nurses in particular experience 30 percent higher Career Purpose scores than the rest of the associate community on the Humana Well-being Index.

During a time when our members had tremendous need for help and guidance, associate connection to our common purpose deepened and strengthened. Our team remains moved by our well-being dream, and nine out of 10 associates find inspiration in Humana’s Bold Goal.

Impacting Others

Humana made a commitment to volunteerism and giving back in 2014, and over the years it’s become a way of life within the culture, helping us connect with our communities and to one another. Unfortunately, volunteerism was among the casualties of 2020, as so many community events had to be canceled because of the need to practice social distancing and other measures in response to the pandemic. And on an individual level, many of us hunkered down, keeping ourselves, our attention and our resources closer to home and family in response to the threat COVID-19 posed to our physical health and our sense of security.

Still, towards the end of the year, our team saw reported volunteerism exceed previous year’s levels, and with a specially-expanded Volunteer Time Off (VTO) benefit in response to the pandemic, one quarter of associates took advantage of VTO. And while participation in Humana’s matching gift program, Giving Together, declined from 2019, it remained well above historical levels, generating $2.2 million for our communities.

Growing Ourselves

Connection to Humana’s collective purpose led many associates to focus more on career aspirations in 2020, turning to the variety of opportunities Humana offers to flourish. More associates than ever before believe Humana provides opportunity for growth and development – we’re now just shy of our goal of 84 percent. Those positive feelings around career growth and development coincide with an increase in a sense of empowerment as noted in our Guiding Behaviors results, which is understandable as our associates work to reassert a greater sense of control over their own lives.

The average number of actions on associate talent development plans increased, reflecting thoughtful choices for growth. The average number of actions rose to 1.8, bringing us within striking distance of our goal.

Humana Well-being Index

The Humana Well-being Index Assessment captures how a person feels about all the dimensions of their well-being. Our results show a decrease in associates’ perception of purpose within their lives. The most significant change relates to the Service aspect of Purpose. Many of us aspire to impact the world around us through serving our communities, and in 2020 that was difficult for many associates, as evidenced by our volunteerism and Giving Together results. Unsurprisingly, perceptions related to Career and Advocacy also trended away from goal, though they remained reasonably steady in a year when so much else changed.
